Takes

Each Slate can hold any number of Takes. Each Take can have one or multiple ‘Take Cameras’ involved in recording that take. Only cameras added to the current slate can be selected as Take Cameras. Not every camera connected to the slate necessarily needs to be involved in the recording of a take. However, Setellite assumes every camera that is part of the slate will also be part of the recording, unless you unlink the camera from the take.

1. Add a new take

To create a New Take, tap and hold the Takes button. A menu expands which offers two options:

  1. Blank Take
Creates a new take without any data attached.
  2. Duplicate Take
Makes an exact copy of an already existing take. At least one take is needed to enable this option.

Takes are numbered sequentially. Setellite assumes the first (new) take you create will be Take 1. If you alter the take number, any future new take will start counting from that number. E.g. a take renamed from ‘Take 1’ to ‘Take 8’ will have a subsequent take numbered ‘Take 9’.

At the moment of creation, a Timestamp for the take is set. This Timestamp is overwritten if you use the Rec button or manually edit the value. Once a Timestamp Stop is also determined, Setellite calculates the delta (duration) of the take.

2. Delete a take

Press the cross in the red box next to the title ‘Take Information’.

On the website: press the cross in the red box on the far right of the Take Number field.

3. 'Take Information Ticket' Attributes

Take Number
Takes are numbered sequentially. Setellite assumes the first (new) take you create will be Take 1. If you alter the take number, any future new take will start counting from that number.
Take Name
Optionally, you can give any take a custom name to label its purpose or rating. E.g. ‘Empty background plate’
Timestamp Start
Is set upon the take’s creation, but can be changed manually as well. Whenever the REC button is pressed, this will overwrite the Start value.
Timestamp Stop
After entering a Stop value, the duration of the take is calculated and displayed (delta). Whenever the REC button is pressed again to stop, this will overwrite the Stop value.

4. Take Cameras

Each take can have one or multiple ‘Take Cameras’ involved in recording the take. Cameras you’ve added to the slate are automatically assumed to be part of the recording and are stacked as bars at the bottom of the ticket. By tapping a bar, the ticket opens: values offered here are not available under the regular Cameras ticket and involve take-specific camera data like Lens Height and Subject Distance.

The ticket of Take Cameras is unique in the sense that it contains ‘From’ and ‘To’ values to record differences between the start and stop of a take. For instance, the focus of the lens (‘Lens Focus’) may vary over time while pulling to keep a moving subject in focus.

4.1. Take Camera Ticket Attributes

Roll/Media
The name or label of the current recording media. This can be internal memory cards or external recording devices.
Lens Focal Length
The lens’ focal length. Can change over time when a zoom lens is involved, while a prime lens has same values at the start and stop of a take. Presets show a range of focal lengths (mm). When a prime lens is selected on the Slate Camera, its focal length will be automatically filled out here.
Lens Height
The distance the camera is raised from the ground.
Lens Focus
Indicate the depth of the sharpness relative to the camera’s lens.
Subject Distance
The distance of the subject in frame relative to the camera’s lens.
Camera T-Stop
The ratio of the lens's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil.
Camera Tilt
The camera stays in a fixed position but rotates up/down in a vertical plane. It is distinguished from panning in which the camera is pivoted left or right.
Camera Dutch
Indicate whether the camera is set at an angle on its roll axis.
Framerate
Framerate of the take being recorded. If a Gear camera was picked when creating a new camera for the slate, the default Framerate (if available) is assumed here.
Shutter Angle
Shutter Angle of the take being recorded. If a Gear camera was picked when creating a new camera for the slate, the default Shutter Angle (if available) is assumed here.
Filter
Enter a custom Filter name, or pick from your Gear selection.

4.2. Duplicate value

The ‘Duplicate value’ button (1) is unique to Take Cameras and facilitates quick copying of fields that don’t change between the start and stop of a take. If you’re on the ‘To’ value, the button draws the info from the ‘From’ field and vice versa, afterwards you’ll proceed to the next field. Especially in combination with the yellow ‘confirm & next’ button (2), you can skip through the fields rapidly (‘From’ > ‘To’ > ‘Unit’).
Whenever "Auto fillout empty 'To' values" is enabled in the Application Preferences, the 'From' value will be automatically copied to the 'To' value whenever the 'To' value is empty.

The Input Calculator changes its layout constantly to facilitate different kinds of input: numeric for values, but presets such as ‘mm’, ‘cm’ and ‘inch’ for ‘Unit’.

To unlink a camera from a take, simply press the cross in the red box. This will not delete the camera from the slate, but deactivates it for the current take. Directly afterwards, you can activate the camera again by choosing ‘Activate Camera’, all data of the camera for this take is cleared.
